Students who understand why the skills they're learning are important are more engaged and better able to take ownership of their education.

And while you do your best to explain why exploring, practicing, and learning math skills is a critical part of being successful in the 21st-century, students still need to hear this message from a variety of influential voices before it sticks.

This week, I have compiled a list of 17 of my favorite and most inspiring math-related quotes from a variety of thought leaders and unique individuals including Albert Einstein, Neil DeGrasse Tyson, George Cantor, and Snoop Dogg.

So, if you have some empty space on your classroom walls (or if that Garfield poster from the 90s is ready to be retired), try posting some of these quote graphics as a daily reminder of why math is an important, exciting, inspiring—and yes, groovy—field of study.

1.) Mathematics is not about numbers, equations, computations, or algorithms: it is about understanding. –William Paul Thurston

2.) There should be no such thing as boring mathematics. –Edsger Dijkstra

3.) Without mathematics, there’s nothing you can do. Everything around you is mathematics. Everything around you is numbers. –Shakuntala Devi

4.) Somehow it’s o.k. for people to chuckle about not being good at math. Yet if I said ‘I never learned to read,” they’d say I was an illiterate dolt.” –Neil Degrasse Tyson

5.) Life is a math equation. In order to gain the most, you have to know how to convert negatives into positives. –Anonymous

6.) If you stop at general math, then you will only make general money. –Snoop Dogg

7.) The only way to learn mathematics is to do mathematics. –Paul Halmos

8.) Mathematics is the most beautiful and most powerful creation of the human spirit. -Stefan Banach

9.) Mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas. –Albert Einstein

10.) Mathematics may not teach us to add love or subtract hate, but it gives us hope that every problem has a solution. –Anonymous

11.) In mathematics, the art of proposing a question must be held of higher value than solving it. –George Cantor

12.) Mathematics knows no races or geographic boundaries; for mathematics, the cultural world is one country. -David Hilbert

13.) Mathematics is the music of reason. -James Joseph Sylvester

14.) Mathematics has beauty and romance. It's not a boring place to be, the mathematical world. It's an extraordinary place; it's worth spending time there. -Marcus du Sautoy

15.) It is the perennial youthfulness of mathematics itself which marks it off with a disconcerting immortality from the other sciences.   -E.T. Bell

16.) Film is one of the three universal languages, the other two: mathematics and music. -Frank Capra

17.) It's fine to work on any problem, so long as it generates interesting mathematics along the way - even if you don't solve it at the end of the day. -Andrew Wiles

Feel free to share these graphics in your classroom, your home, and on social media to remind the world that #mathmatters.
