Exponent Practice Worksheet Review

Do you need some help with solving some of the problems on any of the exponents worksheets in the library above? If so, then you will surely benefit from a quick review of some important math skills and definitions related to exponents.

For starters, it is incredibly important that you are familiar with and understand the laws of exponents, which are a set of rules that can be used to simplify an expression that has an exponent.

Here is a list of the laws of exponents and what they mean:

  • Product Law: a^b x a^c = a^(b+c)

  • Quotient Law: a^b ➗ a^c = a^(b-c)

  • Power of a Power Law: (a^b)^c = a^(bc)

  • Power of a Product Law: (ab)^c = a^b x a^c

  • Negative Exponent Law: a^-b = 1/(a^b)

  • Zero Exponent Law: a⁰=1

These six laws of exponents are summarized in Figure 01 below:

Figure 01: The Laws of Exponents

You will need to understand these laws of exponents to solve many of the problems on the exponents worksheets shared in the library above.

For example, the product law of exponents tells us that when multiplying two or more expressions with the same base, you can add the exponents together without changing the base.

Here are a few examples of how you can use the product law of exponents to simplify expressions:

  • 9³ x 9² = 9⁷

  • 4⁴ x 4⁸ = 4¹²

  • 10³ x 10² x 10⁵ = 10¹⁰

As long as the bases are the same, you can simplify the expression by adding the exponents together and keeping the base the same.

Another useful exponent law to know is the product of a product law of exponents, which tells us that when you raise an entire expression to an exponent, you can simplify the expression by raising each term of the expression by that exponent.

Here are a few examples of how you can use the product of a product law of exponents to simplify expressions:

  • (x⁴)³ = x¹²

  • (abc)³ = a³b³c³

  • (2x²y⁵)² = 4x⁴y¹⁰

To use this rule correctly, you are essentially just distributing the exponent to each term of the expression that is in parenthesis.
