When solving a Mashup Math puzzle, is it mathematically accurate for two symbols to represent the same value?

This question comes up every now and then as it may seem that one or more variables being equal violates an algebraic law and teachers fear that exposing students to such a fallacy can be harmful to their understanding of math.

We took this idea into account when creating our resources and it turns out that multiple variables can equal the same value and there is no algebraic law that says otherwise. In fact, multiple variables equaling the same value is extremely common in algebra and something that every algebra student will come across when dealing with topics such as solving and graphing equations, solving systems of equations, and performing substitution.

For example, the equation y=6-x passes through the point (3,3) where both variables x and y are equal to 3 and are thus interchangeable in that instance. While our puzzles use symbols/icons instead of letters as variables, the concept is the same and mathematically sound. This article on our website goes more in-depth on this topic and why exposing young students to these kinds of problems and concepts at a young age can better prepare them to succeed in algebra.

Videos

Are all of the Mashup Math videos available on your website?

The free math video lessons and tutorials available on our website represent only a fraction of our complete K-12 math video library, which is accessible for free on YouTube. You can subscribe to our channel (which is 100% free with your Gmail account) by clicking here.

Can I download Mashup Math videos from YouTube for offline use?

Yes and no. You can download videos for offline use via YouTube Premium’s video download tool. Otherwise, downloading any of our videos using a third party is a violation of our copyright policy.

Can I watch your YouTube videos without ads?

We run ads on the majority of our videos on YouTube in order to support our channel and fund the creation of new content. Therefore, it is not possible for us to remove ads from our YouTube videos. Note that our channel is certified by YouTube Eductionand does not run ads related to adult content. You can also access all of our videos outside of YouTube without ads via our membership website.

I want to use your videos in my classroom, but my school blocks YouTube. Now what?

If your school district blocks access to YouTube, there is an alternate version called YouTube Kids that allows Admins to restrict inappropriate YouTube content on managed servers. We recommend sharing this information with your school’s IT department along with a request to give users restricted access to YouTube.

Workbooks

What is the difference between the Mashup Math workbooks and the Mashup Math Membership plans?

I want to purchase a workbook and have my school pay for it. Is this possible?

Yes! Mashup Math accepts Purchase Orders from school districts. Please fill out this form to request a quote, vendor information, and/or a copy of our W-9.

I lost my download and did not back-up the file. Can I get a new one?

If I purchase a pdf workbook from the online store, does it include a paperback copy?

No. All of the workbooks available on our online store come as a color pdf document that can be downloaded from the link you receive in your email after making a purchase. If you make a purchase from our online store, you are purchasing a digital pdf version of the book, not a paperback copy (which is why there are no shipping costs).

Is it possible to get a paperback copy of Mashup Math workbooks?

Yes. Paperback copies of several of our workbooks are available on Amazon (free two-day Prime Shipping included). You can find our workbooks by searching for “Mashup Math” on Amazon. Note that the paperback copies are printed in black-and-white.

Why are the paperback workbooks not printed in color?

Amazon is our publisher and they charge very large fees to print the interior of the workbooks in color, so our only option is to print the books in black-and-white like typical paperback math workbooks. It is mentioned in the description of every book on Amazon that they are not printed in color. If you would prefer to have color copies of the workbooks, we recommend purchasing the pdf color copies on our online store and printing them in color.

I want to sign up for a membership plan, but I do not want recurring payments. Is this possible?

There is a way to subscribe for an annual membership without having to worry about any recurring charges when paying by credit card. This can be accomplished by following these steps:

1.)  Create an account and sign-up for an annual membership to start the 7-day free trial.

2.)  Once the 7-day free trial period ends, your account will be active and your credit card will be charged the annual fee.

3.)  After the trial ends and your account is active, go to the Your Account tab on your member dashboard and cancel your account. When you choose the option to cancel your account, your annual membership will still remain active until the end of the full year that you already paid for, but it will not automatically renew and you will not receive any future charges.

For example, if you sign up for an annual plan on January 1st, 2022 the trial period will end on January 7th, 2022 when your card will be charged and your account will become active. Once your account is active, simply use the Your Account tab on your member dashboard to cancel your account (here are step-by-step instructions for canceling for your reference). Once you cancel the account, your access would be scheduled to expire on January 7th, 2023 (rather than auto-renew).

I forgot to cancel my membership plan prior to the renewal date. Can I still receive a refund?

It depends. All members are required to read through and agree to our Terms of Service when they first set up their membership accounts. As per our policy, we only offer refunds for annual memberships if the request is within 30 days of the charge in question. We do not offer refunds on monthly or bi-annual plans. Please refer to Sections 4 and 5 of our Terms of Service for more information.

I am unhappy with the refund policy and I plan on disputing the charge(s) with my credit card company. Is there anything I should know?

All members are required to read through and agree to our Terms of Service when they first set up their membership accounts. We highly encourage all customers to make a note of their renewal date to prevent unwanted renewals and we also offer a generous 30 day refund policy for annual membership plans. Of course, you have the right to dispute a charge with your credit card company and to have the charges temporarily reversed, but we are diligent about filing counter-evidence, including proof that the customer has agreed to the Terms of Service, for such disputes, which are often not upheld after further investigation.

How can I search for specific videos or video topics in the Math Video Library?

The best way to search for videos is to start from the Video Library Landing Page on your member dashboard and then click on the grade level group you are interested in.

Each library is ordered by topic/strand. You can either use the jump-to links at the top of each page to be redirected to see all of the videos associated with that topic or strand or you can use the control + F function on your keyboard to pull up a search bar and type in exactly what you are looking for.
