Long Division: Step-by-Step Quick Review
If you need help with solving the practice problems in any of the long division worksheets above, then you will benefit from this quick review of how to perform long division.
How to Perform Long Division: Step-by-Step
Whenever you are performing long division to solve a math problem, you have to start by identifying the dividend and the divisor.
In math, the dividend is the number that is being divided.
In math, the divisor is the number that you are dividing by.
For example, consider the long division problem: 8⟌100.
In this case, 8⟌100 means 100 ÷ 8, where:
100 is the dividend
8 is the divisor
Note that the dividend will always be the number inside of the ⟌ bracket and the divisor will always be the number outside of it and two the left.
The result of dividing a dividend by a divisor is called a quotient.
To perform long division to solve a division problem, you can follow these steps:
Step One: Start by identifying the dividend (the number that is being divided) and the divisor (the number that you are dividing by). If the problem is not already set up for you, you will have to write the divisor number, then the ⟌ bracket symbol, and then the dividend inside of it.
Step Two: The next step involves a process of multiplication and subtraction. Start by multiplying the divisor by the number that you initially wrote at the top of the ⟌ bracket symbol, then write this result directly below the dividend in the correct place value slot. Continue by subtracting this number from the dividend value, then draw a line beneath the numbers being subtracted and write the result directly below it.
Step Three: Continue by pulling down the next unused digit from the dividend (if all of the digits have been used, then you have already solved the problem). Pull down the next digit and place it directly to the right of the difference that you found at the end of Step Two.
Step Four: Repeat Steps Two and Three by multiplying and subtracting until every digit in the dividend has been used and there is nothing left to pill down. The full vale left above the ⟌ bracket symbol will be your final answer.
By following these four general steps to performing long division, you can solve any division problem on any of the long division practice worksheets above.
