Tips for Solving Math Puzzles for Middle School Students

Here are a few tips that you can share with your middle schoolers to ensure that they have the right mindset and attitude when it comes to solving challenging math puzzles, riddles, and brain teasers:

  • Before you do anything, carefully read the directions and identify any key information and exactly what the problem is asking you to do.

  • Whenever possible, break the problem down into smaller parts that are more manageable. This way, you are less likely to feel overwhelmed.

  • It is always a good idea to create drawings or diagrams that help you to visualize the problem and understand what's going on.

  • Use colored pencils, crayons, or markers to color-code information when applicable.

  • Always look for patterns or relationships between the numbers, variables, and/or important information.

  • Try many different problem-solving strategies, such as guessing and checking, working backwards, or setting up an equation that you can use to solve the problem.

  • It’s ok to make mistakes! If you get stuck, approach the problem with a growth mindset and view your mistakes as learning opportunities.

  • You can always ask a teacher, parent, or tutor for assistance if needed.

  • The more puzzles that you stick with and learn how to solve, the more confident you will become!

  • Always check your work after completing the problem and ask yourself “does my solution make sense?”
