Tips for Solving Math Word Problems

Many students struggle with understanding and solving math word problems at first, but with a good set of hints and strategies, they can easily become skilled at solving math problems in written form. Whether you are a student who is struggling with solving math word problems or a classroom teacher trying to help your students with solving math word problems, these tips can be extremely useful:

1. Read Each Problem All The Way Through
While this first tip for solving math word problems may seem like a no-brainer, many students often overlook reading the directions and carefully reading each problem. By taking the time to read word problems all the way through, you can be sure that you are able to identify exactly what the question is asking you to do as well as all of the key information nested in the problem that you will need to use to solve it correctly.

2. Identify Key Information

Once you have carefully read a math word problem all the way through, it is incredibly helpful to highlight or underline important information such as numbers, units, and important vocabulary terms. Identifying the key information allows you to correctly model the situation using your math skills and let’s you find a correct solution.

3. Ask Yourself: What is This Question Asking Me to Do?

Every word problem is different, so it is important to understand what a given question is asking you to do. Whenever you are working on solving a math word problem, always ask yourself: what is this question asking me to do? and what will the answer to this question look like? These two questions will help guide your work and your strategy for solving the problem.

4. Choose a Strategy and Solve

Once you have identified key information and understand what a word problem is asking you to do, it’s time to choose a strategy for solving the problem and then take a step-by-step approach to solving it. Be sure to show all of your work.

5. Check Your Work

Whenever you think that you have correctly solved a math word problem, you should always go back and check your work for any mistakes. Always ask yourself: does my answer make sense. If you suspect that you may have made a mistake, go back and check your work. Once you are settled on your answer, draw a circle around it and move onto the next word problem.

6. Practice Makes Perfect

The more math word problems that you work on, the better at solving them you will become.
