Number Tracing and Counting Tips

Getting your elementary students (typically in Pre-K and Kindergarten) off to a strong start with learning and understanding math begins with simple skills like number tracing and counting. These crucial mathematical skills are the first step on a child’s journey to developing number sense and excelling in higher levels of math.

While there are many number tracing worksheets and activities available online, they are not all created equally. It is important to find and use number tracing worksheets that are fun and engaging for young students in order to spark their interest and making learning their numbers a memorable and enjoyable experience.

Once students have learned the numbers from zero to twenty and how to write them (this typically starts with number tracing and then writing the numbers without the support of the dotted lines), you can move onto using hands-on materials such as blocks or marbles to help students develop a more tactile understanding of numbers and what they represent.

It is important to note that, when it comes to number tracing, that practice and repetition is key. By giving your child or student plenty of opportunities to write the numbers over and over again will firmly cement his understanding of numbers, which will ultimately help him learn how to count and eventually perform operations on numbers.
