How to Use Our SAT Formula Sheet to Practice

Studying for the SAT exam, especially the math portion, can be challenging, but having good strategies and a strong understanding of formulas and reference equations can make you better prepared to improve your score. One of the best ways to help yourself to improve your score is to know how to correctly apply all of the formulas available on the SAT math formula sheet.

To make the most out of how to use the SAT formula sheet, here are a few tips to consider when you are preparing for the SAT or even the PSAT exam:

  • Be Familiar with the SAT Formula Sheet: Our first tip is simply being aware that every student who takes the SAT exam will have access to the SAT math formula sheet. The sheet includes a set of geometry formulas and facts, algebra equations, and trigonometry formulas that you will have to know how to use in order to solve many math problems on the SAT exam. To be successful on the SAT exam, it is critical that you are familiar with the formula sheet and how and when to apply the formulas to solve different problems.

  • Practice Using the SAT Math Formula Sheet: You should have plenty of experience referencing and using the SAT formula sheet before you take the SAT exam. Whenever you are working on practice problems or practice tests, you should have your SAT formula sheet nearby so that you can reference it and use it to solve problems. The more practice you have with using the formula sheet, the better off you will be in terms of using it to help you get a better score on the actual SAT exam.

  • Memorize Important Formulas: While knowing that you will have access to an SAT formula sheet when you take the exam gives you a break from having to memorize tons of math formulas, you should still make the effort to memorize a few of the most important formulas. So, which formulas should you memorize? The answer to this question may be different for every student. We recommend memorizing the formulas that you find yourself using most often when you are working on practice exams.

  • Know How to Use Formulas: One huge mistake that many students make is thinking that having access to the right formulas is all that you will need in order to solve a problem. While having an SAT math formula sheet during the exam is nice, the sheet itself is only helpful provided that you actually know how to use the formulas correctly.

  • Use Every Formula: When you are practicing for the SAT exam, select practice problems that require you to use all of the different formulas included on the SAT formula sheet. For example, make sure that you work on problems where you have to find the volume of a cone, a cylinder, a sphere, etc. so that you are not using any formula for the first time on the day that you take the actual exam. Again, the more that you practice, the better off you will be!

By following the above tips while you study and prepare for the SAT exam, you are ensuring that you will most effectively use the SAT math formula sheet to your advantage on the day that you take the actual exam. The more that you practice and familiarize yourself with using the SAT formula sheet, the more confident and better able to achieve a high score on the math section of the SAT you will become.
