Shapes Worksheets Review

Learning how to identify, classify, and name 2D shapes based on their unique characteristics is a fundamental math skill that students typically learn at the PreK, Kindergarten, or 1st Grade level.

All of the free shapes worksheets available in the libraries above are great for giving learners plenty of practice and experience with basic shapes including circles, squares, rectangles, triangles, ovals, stars, hearts, pentagons, hexagons, and diamonds. And, since all of our shape worksheets include an answer key, students can check and assess how well they understand their shapes.

If your students are struggling to learn their shapes or with problems on any shape worksheets, we highly recommend printing out our free 2D shapes chart to use as a reference guide until they become more familiar with the common shapes.

Shape Worksheets for Preschoolers

All of the shapes worksheets in the libraries above are appropriate for preschoolers who are learning their shapes for the first time. Our shape worksheets for preschoolers are simple and age-appropriate for kids at the PreK level.

For example, our Shape Match for PreK Worksheets section offers several worksheets that require students to look at common real-world objects, classify its shape, and determine which 2D geometric shape it most closely resembles. The more practice that young learners gain with classifying shapes in this way (and also by matching shapes to their names in word form), the better of an understanding of shapes they will develop.

Young students will also benefit from completing our shape tracing worksheets, since it is incredibly important to be able to draw common shapes like circles, rectangles, and triangles. This fundamental math skill will serve as the foundation for students when they eventually get to more complex levels of geometry.

Shapes Worksheet Tips and Suggestions

As stated earlier, you can download and print our free geometric shapes chart to serve as a reference for young students who are learning their shapes for the first time. We highly recommend printing this chart in color and posting it in your home or classroom where students can reference it whenever they need to.

As students begin to gain a stronger understanding of the basic shapes, you can test them by making sure that they have mastered the following skills:

  • classifying shapes by looking at them

  • naming shapes by looking at them

  • matching given shapes to similar figures

  • matching given shapes to their names

  • matching similar shapes and figures

  • tracing shapes and drawing shapes freehand

  • finding the perimeter of 2D shapes

If your kids are struggling with any of the skills listed above, we recommend going back and working through some of the shapes worksheets available in the library above, especially our shape match worksheets and shape tracing worksheets.

We also recommend bookmarking this page to return to whenever your students need a review of their basic shapes and their properties. And, to learn more about all of the geometric shapes, visit our free online guide: Geometric Shapes Explained.
