Skip Counting Worksheets Review
Skip counting is an simple, but important math skill that every student must learn because it serves as a key foundational skill for learning number sense and how to perform addition and multiplication.
What is skip counting? In math, skip counting is the act of counting numbers using increments that are not equal to one. In other words, instead of counting numbers one at a time (i..e the normal way of counting numbers), you actually “skip” numbers by counting at increments such as by 2, by 5, or by 10. This technique of skip counting allows you to count numbers more quickly and to also recognize number patterns and relationships, which will help you to build a stronger conceptual understanding of numbers and their relationship to each other.
For example, if you wanted to skip count by 2s, you could start at 2 and then “skip” every other number as shown in the following sequence:
2,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,12,14,16,18,20,…
Similarly, you could do the same thing with skip counting by 3s:
3,6,9,12,15,18,21,24,27,…
As shown in Figure 01 below, we can visualize how skip counting works using a number line.
The graphic in Figure 01 above can help you to visualize the act of skip counting, and this process applies to skip counting by any value.
For example, if you wanted to skip count by 5s, you could start at 5 and then “skip” ahead 5 units to the next number, 10, and then again to the next number, 15, and so on and so forth as follows:
5,10,15,20,25,30,35,40,45,50,…
Similarly, you could do the same thing with skip counting by 10s:
10,20,30,40,50,60,70,80,90,100,110,…
The key thing to remember is that, whenever you are skip counting, you must keep the interval the same. So, if you are skip counting by 5s, then every “skip” must be five units ahead. In other words, you would have to add 5 to each number to keep the sequence going.
