How to Use Multiplication Flash Cards
Using multiplication flash cards is a simple yet effective way for students to practice, memorize, and understand multiplication facts such as 6x7=42, 9x8=72, 11x11=121, etc. It is important to give students plenty of opportunities to learn these facts because they are an essential foundational math skill that students will need to utilize at all levels of math starting in elementary school and continuing into college and beyond.
The best way to use our free multiplication flash cards is to print them out on standard printer paper or card stock paper and then cut them out using a scissor. Once you have cut out all of your flashcards, you can shuffle them as you would a deck of playing cards. It is recommended that you lay the cards so that the multiplication problem is on the front (with the solution on the back side).
With the deck of multiplication flash cards in hand, students can look at the multiplication fact on the front and then guess what they think the solution is. They will then flip the card over to see if their answer was correct or incorrect. After completing a card, students can arrange them into piles. The first pile could be cards that were answered correctly and the second pile could be cards that were answered incorrectly. Students can then repeat this process with the second pile to given themselves more practice with multiplication facts that they are unsure of.
Figure 01 illustrates and example of a multiplication flash card with the problem 7 x 9 on the front. A student would look at this problem and then attempt to find the correct answer before flipping the card over to see whether or not they are correct. If the student answered 63, then the card would go in the “correct” pile. Otherwise, the card would be placed in the “incorrect” pile for further review.
